Our estates and facilities team of around 1,600 people provides services to more than 150 locations across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland – including some non-NHS sites.

Our staff are all directly employed by the Trust and are essential to the safe delivery of health care, by ensuring we deliver a clean and welcoming place for staff, visitors and patients. They include among others:

  • Domestic assistants
  • Porters
  • Security officers
  • Catering staff
  • Switchboard
  • Waste management.

We think of our services as either ‘soft’ or ‘hard’.

Soft services

Our ‘soft’ support services include:

  • Cleaning – in addition to the three main hospital sites, our teams also cover Hinckley & Bosworth Community Hospital, Rutland Memorial and Melton Mowbray Hospital, the Bradgate Unit, Herschel Prins and the Evington Centre and a large number of health centres, GP surgeries and offices.
  • Catering – in the three acute hospitals we deliver more 4,000 patient meals every day, within a specified delivery time and complying with national nutritional standards. We also deliver 1,300 meals each day across 17 community and mental health in-patient sites.
  • Portering – this is a wide ranging role, including the daily collection and delivery of laundry to each ward and department, and collection and delivery of mail and medical notes, samples, bloods and pharmacy items.

We also deliver security, transport, waste management, reception, switchboard and customer services.

Hard services

Our estates services provide technical maintenance and engineering services to ensure our buildings and their surroundings are safe and functionally suitable for our patients, staff and visitors. These are mostly delivered through an in-house team of skilled craftsmen including joiners, plumbers, electricians, painters, shift technicians, fire advisors and grounds staff. These are supported and managed by a professional and technical team of estate managers and engineers.

We also provide general property surveying services and our capital team of building and engineering project managers deliver a range of new build and refurbishment construction projects.
