Our pharmacists are experts in medicines and their use. They advise other healthcare professionals on how to choose medicines and how to use them. They also provide direct advice to patients on using medicines safely, maximising the benefits of medicines, managing long term conditions and changing medicine programmes.

The pharmacy services are run from three main departments at Glenfield Hospital (GH), Leicester General Hospital (LGH) and Leicester Royal Infirmary (LRI). They each provide dispensing services for inpatient and discharge requests and ward/clinic stock replenishment. The LGH team is piloting unit dose medicine supply in collaboration with IBSL(UK) Ltd, and the two other departments use ARX/Rowa automated dispensing cabinets.

The clinical pharmacy services – including prescription screening, medicines reconciliation and discharge medication supply – are provided by a team of pharmacists, technicians and assistants based within each clinical specialty. There are also a number of satellite pharmacies at the LRI site providing a near-patient hub for clinical and dispensing services that ensures timely dispensing of medications for discharge.

An aseptic dispensing service based within the main department at the LRI site provides parenteral chemotherapy to adult and paediatric oncology and haematology services, for both inpatient and day case patients.

The medicines information department (MI) based at the LRI provides a comprehensive local and regional MI service to support the clinical pharmacy service, including monitoring the use of high cost medicines within the Trust.

A centralised medicines procurement team is based at the LGH site, which ensures all medicines for our hospitals are purchased in a timely and cost effective manner. Monitoring and management of home care services is also undertaken by members of the procurement team.

Clinical trials are supported by a dedicated team managed as part of the pharmacy service.

A third party provider, Lloyds Pharmacy, provides the outpatient dispensing services on all three sites.
