We have a team of 30 independently reporting sonographers supported by radiology department assistants and with clinical support from radiologists, obstetricians and gynaecologists.
We provide ultrasound services at all three of our hospital sites and at two of these – the Royal and the General – we provide obstetric ultrasound screening to the maternity services.
Sonographers are given the opportunity to develop expertise in many areas of scanning including:
- Early pregnancy
- General abdominal
Sonographers have also been supported in the introduction of extended roles within ultrasound, with two sonographers currently performing head and neck ultrasound and final needle aspiration techniques.
The team is fully committed to training new sonographers and also assists in training other healthcare professionals such as radiologists and obstetricians. We also participate in the Health Education England project to fast track trainees straight into ultrasound training after completing their first degree.
Leicester’s Hospitals is shortly to advertise for a consultant sonographer to assist with building a new ultrasound structure at our Trust and to support and improve training and improve the clinical governance structure in place at present.
There are opportunities to work extended hours and cross-site working is actively encouraged.
