The Emergency Department is led by the Heads of Service, Dr Vivek Pillai, Dr Rachel Rowlands (PED), Dr Mandeep Johal (Deputy Head of Service), Head of Nursing, Kerry Johnston and Head of Operations, Michael Nattrass. 

The Leicester Royal Infirmary has the only Emergency Department serving the city of Leicester and the counties of Leicestershire and Rutland and is one of the busiest in the country, treating over 220,000 new patients, a quarter of whom are children. The ED incorporates:

  • 12 Resuscitation bays
  • 32 bay Majors area
  • Minors with 10 cubicles
  • Primary Care Stream
  • Separate Paediatric ED with 12 rooms and 8 bays
  • 16 bed & 4 chair Emergency Decisions unit
  • 16 bed & 4 chair Emergency Frailty Unit
