Our respiratory single site department is the second largest in the UK, supporting over one million patients. The assessment unit, named the Clinical Decisions Unit, accepts both respiratory and cardiology patients.
We have one short stay ward, four inpatient wards and four HDU beds. We offer a full range of diagnostic investigations, a respiratory physiology lab, advanced bronchoscopic techniques and interventional procedures including LAVAT and EBUS TBNA. Cryobiopsy, radial ultrasound and bronchial thermoplasty are also available.
Our team is made up of 20 consultants, eight specialist registrars, five research registrars, 23 core and foundation level doctors, two consultant nurses, one consultant respiratory pharmacist and one consultant clinical scientist.
We are supported by a wide range of specialists, some of which include a radiology team, asthma and allergy nurse specialists, lung cancer nurse specialists, tobacco cessation services and cystic fibrosis specialists.
Our educational opportunities are plentiful and include support from a clinical supervisor. We hold weekly X-ray meetings, a weekly journal club and a weekly grand round, covering a range of respiratory topics.
For those approaching MRCP, we offer a local programme of bedside teaching led by consultants.
We are nationally and internationally recognised for excellence in clinical and scientific research. Topics include the pathogenesis and management of asthma and COPD, disability exercise and rehabilitation, lung cancer and mesothelioma, TB and ILD.
Our Biomedical Research Centre has over 100 staff who conduct research here and at our Cancer Research UK Thoracic Oncology Centre.
