East Midlands Congenital Heart Centre (EMCHC) already has a fantastic team of Nurses who are highly skilled to deliver care to children following Congenital Heart Surgery. By joining this team, you will have the opportunity to develop these specialists skills that will see you advance from a novice to an expert and where you can progress your Nursing career using the range of pathways we have to offer here at EMCHC. At the same time you will get to impact on the growth and development of the service as we move EMCHC to the LRI to join the rest of Leicester’s Children’s Hospital from 2019 onwards until all of our Children’s Services are located together in a new bespoke Children’s Hospital. Our PICU will join its sister unit at the LRI and the two teams will come together merging their skills to deliver specialist care to all critically ill and post cardiac surgical children of the East Midlands. You will get the opportunity to be part of this amazing transition.
Ward 30 is our Congenital Heart ward and will also move to the LRI to be alongside the PICU. It is currently an 18 bedded ward which provides care for children with Congenital Heart conditions who require interventional and diagnostic Cardiac Catheters and other diagnostic procedures and of course before and after cardiac surgery. The ward currently resides at the Glenfield Hospital and has recently been refurbished to provide age specific areas to enhance the child’s journey. Our patients often require several operations and interventions over the years until they transition to the adult congenital heart service and so over the years become part of the EMCHC family. The multi-disciplinary team consisting of dedicated Nurses, surgeons, cardiologists, allied health professionals and administration staff work closely together providing all aspects of care means which we means consistently gain excellent patient feedback.
Paediatric Intensive Care Unit
As described above, the PICU within EMCHC will move to the LRI in 2019 to merge with its sister regional PICU. We have plans for a 20 bedded purpose built PICU that will provide specialist care for all critically ill children requiring medical and surgical care with multi organ support within the East Midlands. This will also be the new home to the Children’s ECMO service where it will continue to be rated as one of the best centres in the world delivering respiratory and cardiac ECMO to the very sickest of children within the UK. The PICU’s also have highly skilled teams and a dedicated clinical skills facilitation team in order to provide the specialist training and a bespoke orientation programme ensuring that all Nurses whatever their experience is are developed into competent and expert practitioners.
